Post Cinco De Mayo: Snackin’ Caesars

Happy Monday my loves!

Caesar Recipe - She Eats
…And possibly, happy hangover. Yesterday was Cinco de Mayo – as any good tequila lover knows. I spent most of the day lounging on my front steps mowing these and reminising about what it used to be like to have an outdoor space to relax in. Now, I’m chillin’ 90’s-music-video-style with a beer on the front steps of the townhouse and dreaming of backyard gardens and the peace and quiet only an 8′ fence, on a tree-lined side street can provide.

Right. Cinco de Mayo. Focus.

If you’re like me, you’ve managed to down one tequila, two tequila, three tequila, four, more, eight, uhhhh, six? Sleep. Now. Ugh. Another? Ack…. And now you’re in some serious need of some serious remedy.

I give you, the Canadian Snackin’ Caesar.

Now, if you know me at all, you’re aware of my abhorrent distaste for all things nationalistic. I take deep seeded issue with nationalism and anything patriotic. But that’s a whole other black hole of a blog post. Point is, these bad boys are specific to Canada and have got me out of bed after a night of libation hazy tomfoolery more than once. In fact, they’re a dear and welcome necessity.

Caesar Recipe - Drink Garnish - She Eats
What makes them so Canadian? The secondary ingredient – Clamato juice. As far as I’m aware, you can’t get the stuff outside our country. Essentially, it’s less viscous tomato juice with spices and clam broth. It’s fantastic. Mix it with vodka (or gin, if you’re feeling adventurous), some flavorings and a stellar garnish and you have yourself the quintessential Canadian hangover cure. Not to mention one tasty little snack.

Seriously. If you’ve ever wanted a drink, you want one of these.

Yield 2 drinks

Ingredients

  • 4 Oz. Vodka or Gin.
  • Mott's Clamato Juice.
  • Splash of Pickle Juice.
  • Sriracha Hot Sauce.
  • Worcestershire Sauce.
  • 2 Tbsp Fresh Grated Horseradish*
  • 1/2 C Celery Salt, in a shallow bowl.
  • White Pepper.
  • Fresh Lime Wedges for Garnish.
  • Ice.
  • Optional Garnish: Pickled Bean, Celery Stalk, Cube of Cheese, Pickles, Pepperoni Stick, Chicken Wing (cooked), Pickled Pepper, Clam on Toast (cooked).

Instructions

  1. Gently wet the lip of the glasses with a bit of water (or a slice of lime) and then, making a small slice in one of the lime wedges, drag it across the lip of the glass. Dip the glass in the celery salt and turn in a couple of circles to ensure even coating.
  2. Add 2 Oz. of vodka or gin to each glass, followed by a nice pump of hot sauce, a good few dashes of Worcestershire sauce and the horseradish. Gently muddle the mixture with a wooden spoon.
  3. Fill the glasses with ice. Add the Clamato juice, a splash of pickle juice and top it all off with a sprinkle of white pepper. Garnish with another lime wedge with a slit to hold it on the edge of the glass and any other garnish your imagination can concoct. I like to make mine into a snack: cheese, gherkin pickle, pepperoni.
  4. Bottom's up!

Notes

*A word to the wise: Grate fresh horseradish in a well ventilated area, keep clear of eyes and do so in small batches. Don't be fools like we were and grate the mother of all horseradish roots in your basement apartment - that shit could be a chemical weapon. It's way worse than onions. Way worse.

How was your Cinco de Mayo? Any good hangover cures? Ever had a Caesar?

We definitely have clamato in America. I make a similar cocktail with tomato and pickle juice along with tequila. Its the best with lots of fun pickled green veggies. I need to make one soon!

Yesterday I went to Alki beach with the other two generations of ladies (GM and Tot). It was party central. Wall to wall people. Crushing masses of bodies in spandex. Just sex on parade. Really. Makes me wonder why people even got dressed in their hoochie skirts and leopard print 7 inch fuck me pumps. Just walk around naked – cut out the middle man.

I’m realizing today that it was Cinco de Mayo.

Because I’m a mom. And now perpetually uncool.

But I can sing the Dora the Explorer opening song word for word with feeling and inflection. En Espanol.

And it just might sound better with one of these drinks. B/c I think I could make that shit and make it good.

I also remember the Clamato theme song…”Clamato makes it’s snappy! The pick me up that picks you UUUP! CLAMATO!”

A of all: I was like, “WHERE is Lindsey going with this??” hahahaha…

B of all: Yup, sounds about right. The party. Not your uncoolness. But if it helps, I’m more and more uncool by the day. Sans babies.

C of all: Heck yes you could! And… I’ve never heard such a song! haha.

I had heard the “only in Canada” myth about Clamato juice too…however, I found it at Costco when I went to Hawaii in April. Let’s just say that us three Canadian girls were very happy to discover that we would be able to enjoy our beer and clam while on holiday. I’m quite impressed with the snackorations on this ‘lil creation of yours!

OMG! I had no idea! Evidently you can get it in the UK now too but it’s incredibly and unbelievably expensive. Whatevs – as long as more people are drinking caesars, it’s good with me!

p.s. thank you!! I love to load them up with a snack – it’s like a meal!
