Currently: The April 2015 (where the balls did this month go) edition

Whoa. Where did April go?? I’m pretty sure I didn’t eat it but it just flew right by me. Unlike turkeys or chickens or ducks or quail or rabbits, which I would have gobbled up faster than you could say “rabbits aren’t poultry”. I realize rabbits don’t have wings, nor do they fly, nor are they birds but for some reason their meat always reminds me of foul. Not because it’s gross – it’s delicious. Sweet. Tender. Kind of like chicken but better. And usually piled high on top of pasta with a homemade, slow braised ragú. Mmmmm bunny.

This introduction is clearly going nowhere. Point being: This is “Currently”, the April 2015 (where the balls did this month go) edition.

Current Book: I’m back on the YA train. Choo choo! All aboard! This time I’m all about Rick Yancey’s series, The 5th Wave. A post apocalyptic story that’s kind of awesome. Partly because the protagonist chick is hardcore, partly because I love anything to do with zombies or aliens, partly because the hooks and chapter structures remind me of Hunger Games (I haven’t enjoyed a YA novel as much since then) and a lot because the author doesn’t treat us like teenagers. His books have more “fuck” “shit” and “balls” than what come out of my mouth. And I can dig that.

Current Music: I’m sofa king excited to go see the Counting Crows tomorrow. Seriously. I’ve been hanging around over 15 years to see them round here. Possibility days seemed impossible for a long december. But now I’m gonna hop in a big yellow taxi and be up all night . If I fall accidentally in love as the daylight fading, you can’t count on me to come home by a decent hour.

God I’m lame.

Current Guilty Pleasure: Cake. So much cake. Spring Cherry Blossom Lemon Cake, actually.

Current Non-Guilty Pleasure:  ♫ ♪ I want to ride my bicycle I want to ride my bike! ♫ ♪  I got a bike at the start of the month and I’m peddling my ass off. Literally. And maybe also my lady bits. Note to self: Get a better, more padded saddle. My normal rides are about 22kms but if I’m feeling jazzy, I might make it 30. My record is 37. I want more! Weeeeeeeeee!

Apollo Bike - Currently April 2015 She Eats

Current Drink: Shrubs. Shrubs, shrubs, shrubs everywhere. These are drinking vinegars made from fruit, sugar and some kind of vinegar. I know it sounds crazy. But I can’t stop myself. They’re delightfully refreshing with a splash (or 3) of tequila or gin and some soda water. Recipe coming soon.

Current Food: Suppers of garlic confit mashed potatoes, sautéed kale with white beans, roasted tomatoes and a sprinkling (aka a butt load) of crispy grass fed bacon and some balsamic reduction drizzle. Because Spring = fresh, delicious local veggies and I want all I can fit inside me… That’s what she said.

Vegetarian Dinner - Currently April 2015 She Eats

Current Favourite Show: Salem is back, guys. Salem.

Current Wish List: A new computer. Seriously. Mine takes about a year and a half to boot up, another year and a half to load my MacMail and even longer to power down. I’m gonna power karate chop it in the face soon.

Macbook Pro Coffee Shop - Currently April 2015 She Eats

Current Needs: To calm the fuck down. Since Dad died in October I’ve become an anxiety frought wreck. It’s usually okay during the day as long as I keep busy but once I slow down, the fear creeps in and I get sad. Anxious. Angry. And generally shitty. My gal Suzy sent me some drops of joy – pure essential oils to help with the feelings of shittiness and they are definitely working.

Current Indulgence: Gin martinis (shaken, not stirred), popcorn with lots of brown butter, red curry powder, Spanish smoked paprika, maldon salt and shaved Parmesan cheese. And books. All at the same time. This past Saturday I literally spent the entire day from 9am until 4pm in bed reading and doing absolutely nothing else but snacking and macking. Okay, no macking. Unless you count me cat calling John from the bedroom for another hot water bottle.

Martinis and Popcorn - Currently April 2015 She Eats

Current Triumphs: Not even mine but so very, very proud (while we’re on the subject of John) of the bf for making it into the finals at The ATX Television Festival in Austin, Texas. That’s right ma – we’re goin to Texas! He’s gonna be mad awesome and pitch a TV Pilot to some big TV execs and totally win and become this super famous television writer. And I’ll eat at food trucks.

Current Epiphany: I want to go back to school. I’m seriously considering going back for my Master’s degree in Oceanography and Earth Sciences. Like, 99% sure I’m gonna do it. So now I need to sort my shit out, get my shit together and make some hard choices about how to make it happen. Especially considering I graduated my undergrad with a liberal arts degree. Any tips?

Current Bane of Existence: I’m back to hating my sleeve tattoo that Yuko designed for me. My tattooist and I just finished filling in the colour and it’s so sore and itchy and flaking on everything. We might need one more quick round (read: less than 4 hours in the studio) of touch ups and then it’ll be all done! It started in October looking like the photo below… Wait for it. New photo coming soon.

Current Excitement: It’s 4:26pm. That means in 3.5 minutes it’s Shrubbin’ time!

Current Breakfast: Aw yeah boi!! Speaking of shrubbin, I used the fruit solids from my rhubarb shrub to make french toast. It’s pretty much the best. thing. ever.

Current Fear: I’m going to suck at science.

Current Laughs: I fall off my new bike. A lot. It’s about 2 inches too tall for me to reach the ground comfortably and if I don’t sstep forward and down immediately when I stop, I’m as awkward as a …. girl who can’t stay on her bike. Luckily they aren’t laughing at me, they’re laughing with me.

…Right?

Current Obsession: Overnight oats!! The past 2 months I’ve been inhaling the heck out of Avocado Toasts with lime, Haloumi cheese and a ton of chili flakes but my new thing is overnight oats. I’ve discovered the key is using steel cut oats, not regular rolled. Regular rolled oats = a big pot of baby mush. Delicious baby mush, but still baby mush. Steel cut oats are much more resilient. I know – it looks like a pile of poop. But seriously – these are delicious. Recipe coming soon…

Current Procrastination: Right now I’m seriously procrastinating sweeping the patio (for some reason we collect a lot of dead little tiny beetle things out there) and putting away the laundry. On principal, I don’t do laundry.

Current Mood: I’m a bit chilly because I can’t put a sweater on over my new tattoo (it rubs) and the door is wide open and it’s only about 15 degrees today (that’s about 60 for the Americans in the audience) but I’m too lazy to get up and close the door. Plus I love the fresh air. Because hey – I live in Vancouver. I’m drinking a shrub. And I’m talking with you. Life could be worse for sure.

    Have you ever tried passionflower extract for anxiety? You can find it pretty easily at health food stores, GNC, etc here (not sure about Canada). I’ve been using it for the past couple years to help manage mine. If I start to feel a little froggy, I add 20-30 drops to a tiny bit of water and shoot it (tastes kind of herb-y but not bad). As someone who has struggled with anxiety and depression for a long time, I find it to be hugely helpful and highly recommend it.

      I have not Tara – but I will. I don’t mind herby at all (shhhh, I got my weed card on Friday! God bless Vancouver 😉 ) so I’ll definitely check it out. Thank you for the recommendation! xo!

    Love keeping up with you Kristy…except that I can’t keep up with you. It’s impossible. I thought I had a head full of crap and not really crap. I may have beat on the crap end…you definitely have me beat on important crap. Maybe those of us with all that stuff raging between our ears are prone to anxiety. For mine, I use Energetix Field of Flowers. Works for me. But I say keep on with the Cherry Blossom cake and Maritnis. That should do it:)

    Where DID April go? Although I am sort of ready for May. I just need to wrap my head around the fact that I once again committed to TWO vegetable gardens. EEEK. Things will settle down by the end of the month though, so if I can just get through the next few weeks with my sanity mostly in tact, we’ll be okay.

    I’m going to see Counting Crows too, when they come to Montreal in May!!!! I am so excited! I drove down to Virginia Beach in 2003 to go see them. John Mayer opened for them (before he was famous). It was the best! I am shocked they are coming to Montreal. I assumed that they’d never make it out here. If they don’t play my favourite song “Change”, I will write them angry letters. I am completely obsessed with the August and Everything After album. I’ve bought it 3 times over the years because I always have it with me wherever I go and I keep losing it in different places. Oh, I can’t wait!

    Also, I am excited to see the final sleeve 🙂

      AHHHH!!!!! I’m so excited for you Janice!! You will love love love them. Is it weird that Adam looks almost the same as he did in 1993 and I still wanna rub up against him? lol… I was hoping they’d sing Anna Begins but they didn’t. But they did play a ton of old stuff which was really surreal. Let me know how much you enjoy it!

    I don’t know where April went either, although I do like that balls made an appearance.

    I tried shrubs a couple weeks ago, and they were fantastic and this was before the alcohol was added so I can safely say I understand your new obsession.

    Anxiety is really tough buddy. I feel ya on that. Might I suggest a little guided imagery or perhaps processing all the shitty emotions.

    I’m procrastinating on packing. We leave for San Diego tomorrow and I have not a lick of clothing ready. Eep. The plan is to hit it hard when I get home from work tonight.

    I think we might be twins. I just found your website and have been reading your posts pretty much all day. I used to write for a newspaper in Saratoga Springs, NY and when my editor asked if I wanted to review the Counting Crows concert, I almost tackled her to the ground in excitement.

    I work at a local market and we just had a vendor stop in to sample shrubs. We mixed his pineapple-turmeric shrub with some tangerine seltzer and it was amazing!

    As for biking, buy some padded shorts. I used to bike 20 miles round trip to work and it made a world of difference. Also, I definitely fell off my bike tons when I first started. Have you tried lowering your seat?

    Lastly, my father passed away in October 2011, and I know just how you feel as far as anxiety goes. Yoga helped me a lot. Feel free to email me to share stories if you feel like it. I also have a bunch of blog posts about it on my blog (which I haven’t updated in a while).

    As I am typing this, a green onion just fell out of my shirt. I felt this might be appropriate to mention. I’m making a spinach-feta casserole and lemon-parmesan asparagus.
