Cozy Maple Whiskey Sour

You guys… It’s so cold in here, I could cut glass.

I’m not even kidding.

Christmas Cocktails: Cozy Maple Whiskey Sour with Sage Simple Syrup - She Eats
It seems Winter hath arriveth, with great force and vengeance.

And in Vancouver, that means sopping wet, windy and dark.

The moisture just gets into the bone. And not in the sexy way.

I’ve taken to seeking refuge indoors, locked far away from the windows that make up one full wall of my apartment, with the heat cranked, and donning hand-knitted socks from this gem & sweaters that are so old and pilled and stretched out, they have no business being seen anywhere but the dark-by-4pm corners of my laundry room. With the door firmly closed.

TMI: Sometimes I feel the same way about my vagina.

Uhhh…. Awkward…?

Basically I’m just trying to keep cozy and not freeze my nipples off. Or have them poke an eye out. Because let’s be honest – when it’s this chilly and you have girls as – ahem, ample – as mine,  it’s a real risk.

Much like having trouble finding dresses that fit in the waist, the bust AND the ass. Or accidentally recreating a scene from Baywatch while on vacation. Or letting one slip out in an unfortunate wardrobe-malfunction to get free french fries at the drive-thru, at 3am, after consuming oceans of whiskey.

Totally hypothetical, by the way.

I’ve also stored away the Summer Mint Cucumber & Smoky Jalapeneo Margaritas , Gin Old Fashioneds and Sparkling Rhubarb Shrubs in favour of more cozy drinks like the Winter Wonderjam Whiskey Smash, Fire Cider Hot Toddy and Nog-Casian.

Oh yeah! And today’s recipe: A maple whiskey sour with sage simple syrup.

Cozy? Hell yeah. Boozy? You betcha. Likely to land you in one of the afore mentioned precarious situations? It’s entirely possible.

Cozy is clearly the over-arching theme of this post. That, and inappropriate jokes about my breasts. And it was inspired by a group of bloggers I consider dear friends. The Connecting Over Cocktails club (#FBCConnectingOverCocktails). These peeps got mad skillz and I’m so grateful they’re part of our community. I really do have the best friends in the world – they’re supportive, talented, inspiring, challenge me to do and be better both on the blog and in life, and best of all, like to socialize over 1 (or 8) drinks. And I’m thrilled to share their “cozy” concoctions with you here today as well. Feel free to rub up against them – I do. They like it.

Maple Whiskey Sour with Sage Simple Syrup

Prep

Cook

Total

Yield 1 serving

Ingredients

For the Sage Simple Syrup:

  • 1 C water
  • 3/4 C pure maple syrup
  • 1/2 C fresh sage leaves

For the Cocktail:

  • Juice of 1 lemon (approx. 2 shots worth)
  • 1 shot simple syrup
  • 2 shots bourbon or rye whiskey
  • 1 egg white
  • Ice
  • Garnish to serve: Lemon twist + bourbon soaked cherry (optional)

Instructions

Make the Sage Simple Syrup:

  1. Place all ingredients in a pot over medium-high heat on the stove. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool. Strain into a clean non-reactive container (i.e. a mason jar) and keep for up to 1 week in the fridge.

Make the Cocktail:

  1. Place all ingredients except the garnish into a cocktail shaker or mason jar. Cover tightly. Shake for 30 seconds as fast and as hard as you can. Be careful if using a mason jar that you don't break the glass with the ice.
  2. Strain into rocks or coupe glasses and garnish with a strip of lemon zest and if using, a bourbon cherry.

Notes

When slicing the zest off your lemon, make sure you remove any white pith on the under-belly of the zest - it's very bitter and you don't want to drink that.

I love sours and this one seems particularly appropriate for the cold, wet weather we’ve been having. I’m reluctant to brave the outdoors lately. I’d much rather stay in with one of these.

Wow! I can’t even follow a recipe properly and you are inventing cocktails! This one looks awesome! And yes, I know all about the moisture getting to the bone… you’ll know even better when you get to middle-aged like me! Lol!

This is such a stunning cocktail, Kristy! I love the sound of the sage maple syrup — it’s a unique combination that I can only imagine is extremely delicious. It was a pleasure collaborating with you and I’m off to pre-order your book this weekend. Cheers, lady!

It was extremely delicious Justine! A little bitter but I like bitter flavours – especially in cocktails. I’m really not a sweet kinda gal… Except my personalty of course πŸ˜‰ I’m so so happy to collaborate with you (and not just because you bought my book – thank you from the bottom of my glass for that by the way)…. You’re amazing and inspiring to me.

Alright. So I grew up in Edmonton. Winter was cold and snowy, and I was not particularly down with that. Now I’m in Vancouver and the temperature is a lot more to my liking. I don’t even mind the rain. But the DARK. WHAT. THE. HELL. Nobody told me to expect this. It’s like the cloud cover is so low, so grey, and so thick that the sun just rolls on over, hops back into bed and says “SCREW IT.” You know when you find that one corner of a room, behind some furniture or a curtain, or in a room you never use (hah, as if I could afford to have an unused room), and it’s dark and dusty and vacant and there may-or-may-not be a spider chilling out, hairy little legs neatly tucked in? That’s Vancouver in November. And we’re all the spiders. Hairy legs and all.

It’s a kickass cocktail Kristy (jeez, that could be the title of your next book). Love the sage, love the photos, love the maple. Proud to call you a collaborator and a friend. Cheers.

Like Jen said above, Sean, I literally just spit out my coffee reading this. Or at least my tea.

IT IS GOD DAMN DARK ALL THE TIME and we are TOTALLY spiders!!!!! I’m now living in a 480 square foot apartment downtown and there are not many places for 8 legged spiders to hide – especially since my hairy-ass legs are taking up all the room. Because let’s be frank: Until the clouds clear up and the sun comes back, I’m hibernating in the dark corners of my teeny-tiny apartment. With lots of these cocktails. And an entire bathtub FULL of your Night Heron (Espresso & Cocoa Cocktail with Hazelnut Milk – hellooooo!!! Come to mama!) …. I’m so honoured to be your friend, collaborator and fellow person who can’t afford any unused room πŸ˜‰

Just in time for the holiday season. I’m sure the girls will love one of these when them come over.
And I finally have an excuse to crack open my bourbon cherries. Cheers!

I’m gonna need you to come fix that for me please. My version of cocktails is to just pour bourbon in a glass. Not as fancy, but definitely still good.

Okay, I’ve only been to Vancouver once and it was thankfully in the summer, but for realβ€”is it that cold because of moisture?! This is such a foreign (and fascinating) concept to me. But luckily you have that AMAZING looking cocktail to keep you company! πŸ˜‰ Your photos are absolutely stunning; I feel like we’re bundled up in some cozy, dimly-lit bar or something. So fab. Great collaborating with you, Kristy!

I’m no good at mixing drinks, which is why i usually stick to cooking the food and leave the liquor aspect of the meal up to my brother in law during family gatherings.. This collection of recipes has me wanting to try them all though!
